Enzymatic hydrolysis for cellulosic ethanol

Second-generation bioethanol uses lignocellulosic feedstocks such as agricultural residues, bagasse and suitable fibre-rich waste streams. Pretreatment helps make carbohydrates accessible; enzymes then convert accessible cellulose and hemicellulose into smaller sugars for a compatible fermentation process.

A complementary cellulase enzyme blend

Endoglucanases

Cut internal bonds in accessible cellulose chains, creating new chain ends for complementary activities.

Exoglucanases

Act from cellulose chain ends to release shorter sugars, often including cellobiose.

β-Glucosidase

Hydrolyses cellobiose and suitable short glucans to glucose, supporting the combined cellulase system.

Hemicellulases for straw, stover, bagasse and wood

Xylanase and other hemicellulases can complement cellulases when the feedstock contains accessible hemicellulose. Mannan-rich materials may call for different supporting activities from xylan-rich straw. Composition, pretreatment and enzyme compatibility determine the screening panel.

Match the blend to your pretreatment

Mechanical, chemical and thermal pretreatments produce different substrate accessibility and inhibitor profiles. Share washing or detoxification steps, solids loading, pH and temperature before selecting a blend. Enzymes do not remove the need for suitable pretreatment, and pentose fermentation requires an appropriate organism.

Measure sugar release and fermentation outcomes

Screen at a consistent enzyme loading and feedstock basis with appropriate controls. Measure glucose and other relevant sugars, residual solids and downstream fermentation results. Use the enzyme cost calculator alongside trial data to compare cost per tonne rather than formulation price alone.

FAE and laccase: different roles.

Feruloyl esterase targets ferulate ester linkages and can complement xylanase on suitable plant materials. Laccase acts on phenolic substrates and requires oxygen; assess it as a separate treatment where useful. It is not a universal lignin-removal enzyme, and its effect on fermentation inhibitors must be measured.
